Winter: May to September

· · · · ·

Discover the park from a completely different perspective, combining the serenity of walking on snowy trails with the thrill of paddling in our inflatable canoes. We’ll reach corners of Tierra del Fuego National Park that few know, living the authentic experience of exploring winter nature by paddling through rivers and bays, just as its original inhabitants did thousands of years ago. Between both activities, we'll enjoy a well-deserved lunch with beverages, regaining energy with a delicious hot meal.

The excursion begins with a trip from the hotel to the End of the World Train Station. There, passengers who wish can take a 1-hour train ride (this service is not included in the fare). Passengers who do not take the train will have time to explore the valley area, which is covered in a white blanket of snow, on foot.

Next, the adventure continues on foot along medium-difficulty trails. The path may be covered in snow or ice, but with the appropriate clothing, this walk should not be a great challenge for those who are used to exercising.

The effort is rewarded upon arriving at the shore of the Lapataia River. Here, lunch will be served inside a heated dome, designed to protect passengers from the wind and cold, and with a panoramic view of the natural environment.

After lunch, equipped with rubber boots, over-trousers, and life vests, we will paddle safely in inflatable canoes. The journey of approximately one hour takes us through the icy waters of the Lapataia River to its mouth at the sea, in the impressive Lapataia Bay.

  • 12:45 pm: Break for a hot lunch in our heated dome.
  • 02:00 pm: After lunch, we receive a technical talk and prepare for the canoe adventure.

The climate in Tierra del Fuego is famously unpredictable; it is possible to experience sun, rain, and wind all in a single day. The rains are rarely torrential. In summer, average temperatures are around 10°C (with variations between 5°C and 15°C), while in winter they are usually close to 0°C. The key to enjoying your trip is to be well-prepared.

Essential Clothing: The "Onion" Method
To ensure comfort during outdoor activities, dressing in layers is crucial. The "onion" system allows you to adapt your clothes to changing weather conditions and your level of physical activity.

  • Layers: Wear several thin garments that can be easily put on or taken off to regulate your body temperature in response to wind or sun.
  • Footwear: This is the highest priority. It is vital to have waterproof footwear that offers robust protection, ideal for walking on wet, muddy, or snowy terrain.
  • Jacket: Indispensable. A waterproof or water-resistant jacket will effectively protect you from rain and wind.

During the canoe paddle, we will provide you with the necessary equipment. You can bring cameras and cell phones during the paddle. However, for your comfort and the safety of your equipment, we suggest opting for compact cameras or cell phones that can be easily stored away in case of rain. The use of large photographic equipment is not recommended.

Recommended Clothing:

  • Thermal undergarments (shirt and leggings for those who are particularly sensitive to the cold).
  • Comfortable long pants for trekking.
  • Waterproof trekking boots for walking on mountainous terrain.
  • A fleece or microfleece jacket/sweatshirt.
  • A rain/windproof jacket. Ideal: Gore-tex or softshell.
  • A warm hat and neck warmer (buff); gloves.
  • An extra pair of socks.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Bringing your own reusable bottle helps us avoid using disposable plastics: we will have water to refill it!
